I understand what you're saying, but we probably are better off sticking with what people commonly understand. Terms for race, ethnicity, and national origin (not to mention other social and religious distinctions) tend to be rather sloppy and they change over time.
For instance: My mother's people used to be orientals, now they are asians or pacific islanders. They called themselves nihonjin, or niponjin, but were always Japanese to most Americans (or just japs). My mother is nisei, her parents arriving on these shores almost a hundred years ago. Then they were Japanese-Americans (with or without the hyphen). I am sansei, but not really since I am only a hapa-hakujin, except to the hakujin who think I'm half Japanese?
At least I'm all American.
